In the UK, electric car charging stations will be mandatory in new construction from 2022

The installation of an electric vehicle charging point will be mandatory in the UK in new construction and as part of « Major renovations » from 2022, announced British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Monday 22 November.

The government hopes that 145,000 new charging points will be created each year thanks to the new regulations, as the UK has set 2030 a ban on sales of new petrol and diesel vehicles in the country.

This obligation will apply « From next year » to the constructions of « New houses and buildings, such as supermarkets or workplaces » as well as for buildings subject to « A major renovation », specified the services of the Prime Minister in a press release.

The government adds that it has so far supported the construction of « More than 250,000 » recharging points at home and in the workplace.

Attract private investment

Boris Johnson is due to speak Monday morning to British business leaders at the annual conference of the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), an employers’ organization.
