In Ukraine, many government sites targeted by a cyberattack

Many Ukrainian government sites were the target of a large-scale cyberattack on Friday January 14, according to Kiev. The aggression, not immediately claimed, comes amid heightened tensions between Ukraine and Russia, which Kiev and its Western allies accuse of planning a new invasion of Ukrainian territory.

« The official website of the Ministry of Education and Science is temporarily closed because of the global attack which took place on the night of January 13th to 14th », announced the latter on his Facebook page. The sites of other ministries, including that of emergency situations and that of foreign affairs, were also inaccessible, Agence France-Presse noted on Friday morning.

Before the Foreign Ministry’s website was made inaccessible, a threatening message was posted by the perpetrators of the cyberattack on its homepage in Ukrainian, Russian and Polish. “Ukrainians, be afraid and prepare for the worst. All your personal data has been uploaded to the web », could we read. This message was accompanied by several logos, including a crossed out Ukrainian flag.

Ukraine has been the target of cyber attacks several times in recent years, including one in 2017 which targeted several critical infrastructures, and another in 2015 against its electricity grid. Ukraine and its Western allies have repeatedly accused Moscow of carrying out cyber attacks against their sites and infrastructure, which Russia is defending itself against.

The American justice revealed in October to have indicted six Russian military intelligence agents for these cyberattacks. They are also believed to be the source of other attacks around the world, such as those targeting Emmanuel Macron’s party before the 2017 French elections and the 2018 Olympic Games in South Korea.
