North Korea confirms that it has carried out new missile tests

North Korea launched two short-range missiles from a train on Friday, state media said on Saturday (January 15th). These trials were organized to « verify and judge the mastery of the action procedures of the railway regiment », Pyongyang’s official KCNA news agency said.

Friday’s launch “demonstrated great maneuverability and a high success rate”, according to the KCNA. Discussions have been held « on the establishment of a nationwide railway missile operating system », adds the agency.

The firings took place at 2:41 p.m. and 2:52 p.m. local time (6:41 a.m. and 6:52 a.m. Paris time) and the missiles traveled a distance of 432 km at an altitude of 36 km in the direction of the eastern Korean Peninsula, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said.

 » Draw attention «

This is the third arms test organized by Pyongyang since the beginning of the year, despite new American sanctions. Friday’s launch took place after Washington’s decision on Wednesday to impose new financial sanctions against five North Korean nationals, following previous tests of missiles presented as hypersonic, a first on January 5 and then a second, supervised in person by leader Kim Jong-un on January 11.

While Secretary of State Antony Blinken said North Korea was probably trying « to attract attention » with this series of missile strikes, Pyongyang accused the United States of inflaming « Intentionally » the situation.

The dialogue between Pyongyang and Washington remains at an impasse after the failure in 2019 of talks between Kim Jong-un and then US President Donald Trump.
